Often we become confused by some of the language relating to current technology. The following are but a few of the terms explained.

www
This stands fro world wide web and
is the first three letters in most web
addresses.

Downloading
The internet is a bit like a road
with information going both ways.
Some people are putting information
up on the web known as uploading whilst
others are downloading information using
their browser. You can download music,
images and documents
Browser
A browser is a special computer program
which talks to the world wide web and
allows people to look at web pages.
There are different types of browsers
such as Google, Firefox, Safari,Yahoo,
Internet Explorer.

Pop-Up
Sometimes when you visit a website a
new browser window opens without you
doing anything. This is known as a pop
up.
URL
Stands for "uniform resource locator".
The URL is the address of the website.
Like a postal address it has to be written
correctly.

Cookies
Cookies are small pieces of data saved
on your computer by websites. They
often contain passwords and log-in details,
saving you from inputting your information
each time you visit a particular web site.
Domain
Name
The name of a website after the www
part of an address is called the domain
name. Sometimes you can tell which
country the website is from by the
domain name. If the address ends in
com.au its from Australia.

Firewall
A firewall is not an actual wall but something
that limits the flow of information on your
computer. It is usually installed by businesses
or offices like the Department of Education. Its
used as a safety feature to limit access to
certain websites
Links
Some websites have links which allow
you to jump from one place to another on
that website or to another website. Links
appear as words in another colour, usually
they are blue. They are a bit like a short cut
to another webpage or document.

Tablet
A tablet looks like a large phone, but is in fact
a computer without a keyboard or a mouse.
Theyoperate by using a touch-screen. Tablets
use wireless networks to get on-line and can be
used in much the same way as any computer
Wireless or
WiFi
If you have been to an airport, cafe,library
or hotel and seen people using their
computers, phones or tablets, chances
are they are doing so by accessing a
wireless network also known as Wi-Fi. A
wireless network uses radio waves to
communicate. Its a bit like using a phone
or television.

Social
Networks
Social networks is the generic term given to
a group of websites which are all about
interacting with other people. The biggest
sites are Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, LinkIn,
and Youtube.

Bluetooth
Like the wireless network, Bluetooth
communicatesusing radio waves
eliminating the need for connecting wires
and leads.Bluetooth operates between
two devices over a short distance. It can be
used to your computer to a mobile phone,
PDAs, TVs, for many other digital device.
